Get Out of the Boat

“Then He directed the disciples to get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent away the crowds. And after He had dismissed the multitudes, He went up into the hills by Himself to pray. When it was evening, He was still there alone. But the boat was by this time out on the sea, many furlongs [a furlong is one-eighth of a mile] distant from the land, beaten and tossed by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch [between 3:00–6:00 a.m.] of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified and said, It is a ghost! And they screamed out with fright. But instantly He spoke to them, saying, Take courage! I AM! Stop being afraid! [Exod. 3:14.] And Peter answered Him, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water. He said, Come! So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and he came toward Jesus. But when he perceived and felt the strong wind, he was frightened, and as he began to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me [from death]! Instantly Jesus reached out His hand and caught and held him, saying to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt? And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat knelt and worshiped Him, saying, Truly You are the Son of God!”

– Matthew 14:22-33 AMPC

After Jesus fed the 5000, he instructed his disciples to get in the boat and go out to see. He went up into a hill to pray. There was a large storm brewing.  Jesus walks out to the disciples on the water, Peter asks, “Is it you? If it is you, Lord, let me come to You.”  Jesus was not only walking on water, but he was walking on the storm. If we focus on the storm instead of the one that can walk on the storm, the storm can crush us. We must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.

The Old Testament book of Lamentations is not a book that we normally focus on or even read. But in the middle of that book is a promise about God‘s everlasting, mercy and kindness towards us.

His mercies are new every morning. He is at the center of your mess, your hard times, your desolate times, your storms. God is always at the center of it all!

You went to sleep last night, then woke up this morning and picked up the very thing that you gave to God yesterday to take care of. You were never meant to be your own God. Let Him have it.  God‘s mercies never fail.

“Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully. [Ps. 55:22.]”

– 1 Peter 5:7 AMPC

The King James Bible says it like this…

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

– 1 Peter 5:7

He walks upon our storms, He is in the middle of our mess, and His mercies are never ending.  What precious promises we have that God is faithful to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves!  He’s got us!
